Y6 School Council visit Goldsmiths' Hall
The Year 6 members of the School Council were invited to Goldsmiths' Hall this week to have a look behind the scenes and see what happens behind those large imposing doors.
On entering this impressive building, we were greeted by shining chandeliers, gleaming marble along with sparkling silver and gold.
After some very welcome refreshments we were introduced to members of staff who would be with us for the day and given a brief history of the company. We then set off to complete a quiz which meant we were able to go into the Court Room, The Hall and The Livery Hall among other places. Having handed in our answer sheets for marking, we then went on to having a go ourselves at hallmarking – which was harder than it looked to get an even hallmark! No room for mistakes when working with gold! Next we designed our own personal coins and await a call from the Royal Mint. We then learnt about becoming an apprentice in the 17th century and realised how very fortunate we are today. Finally, we became hallmark detectives looking for genuine silver objects and working out where they came from and when they were made.
We also enjoyed a lovely lunch in the main hall followed by pancakes, fresh fruit and ice cream – truly delicious!
We thoroughly enjoyed our day at Goldsmiths’ Hall and thank them for all they did to make the day so interesting and enjoyable.
