Starting the day the Granton way!

Following extensive stakeholder consultation, this academic year Year 6 have been benefitting from an extended school day which runs from the earlier start time of 8am to 3.15pm (the end of the day for the whole school).

As part of this innovatve and unique extended day, all Year 6 pupils start the day with half an hour of PE and a healthy, nutritious breakfast.

As well as the health benefits of starting the day with PE and breakfast, the Year 6 extended day also aims to support the children in prearing for their transition to secondary school, with many pupils making the journey to school more independently and improving their organisational skills as they prepare to leave the house that little bit earlier.  We have sought support from organisations such as Transport for London and the Sutton Life Centre to support our Year 6 pupils in feeling prepared and ready for their transition to secondary school.

Extensive stakeholder feedback has been sought throughout the year to monitor and ascertain the impact of the new Year 6 day and analysis of interim feedback from parents, pupils and staff has indicates the following:

  • 92% of parents and carers are happy with the new extended day.
  • 96% of parents and carers believe the extended day has helped with their child's learning during the day.
  • 98% of pupils believe the extended day has helped them prepare for secondary school.
  • 100% of staff believe we should continue with the extended day for future Year 6 pupils.

Year 6 pupils are thoroughly enjoying their new extended day which has rapidly become firmly embedded into the Granton way of life.
