Harvesting and preparing for a new year
On Thursday 12 September a team of volunteers from Deloitte visited Granton to help us prepare the Nature Area for the new school year. Despite BBC weather promises of a dry day, the initial wet weather did not dampen enthusiasm.
We had several jobs for the volunteers so they split into three groups. The first group gave the willow tree a haircut so that we could get into the Nature Area safely, the second group cleared space for the "soon to arrive" greenhouse, while the third group harvested squashes, sweetcorn, tomatoes, courgettes, chillies and beans to make space for a new environment called a bog garden. During their digging all the teams were amazed to find an array of creatures including toads, newts, spiders, snails, slugs and ladybirds which all point to our Nature Area being healthy and happy.
After their delicious, healthy school dinners the volunteers completed various other jobs including painting planters, putting up a blackboard for information about the Nature Area, transplanting a hedge and general tidying up.
By 3:15 when the Granton children were going home we were amazed at the transformation that had taken place in our Nature Area. It is now ready for the new school year and will be well used by the Granton family in their learning activities.
A big thank you to Deloitte and watch this space for further news and developments in the Nature Area.
